英語ネイティブも、"it is raining" の "it" が何を指すのか考えることがあるんだ、ということをポール・オースターの『ガラスの街』（柴田元幸訳）を読んで知った。

それは "it is raining" "it is nitght" と言うときの "it" が指すものに似ている。その "it" が何を指すのか、クインはこれまでずっとわかったためしがなかった。あるがままの物たちの全般的状況、とでもいうか。世界のさまざまな出来事が生じるその土台であるところ、物事があるという状態。それ以上具体的には言えない。

It was something like the word 'it' in the phrase 'it is raining' or 'it is night.' What that 'it' referred to Quinn had never known. A generalized condition of things as they were, perhaps;the state of is-ness that was the ground on which the happenings of the world took place. He could not be any more definite than that.
