倫敦塔 - 夏目漱石

作中に登場するダンテ『神曲』地獄篇第３歌冒頭。

まず、原文。

Per me si va ne la città dolente,
 per me si va nell' eterno dolore,
 per me si va tra la perduta gente.
Giustizia mosse il mio alto Fattore;
 fecemi la divina Podestate,
 la somma Sapienza e il primo Amore.
Dinanzi a me non fur cose create,
 se non eterne, ed io eterno duro:
 lasciate ogni speranza, voi ch' entrate.

次に漱石訳。

憂の国に行かんとするものはこの門を潜れ。
永劫の呵責に会わんとするものはこの門をくぐれ。
迷惑の人と伍せんとするものはこの門をくぐれ。
正義は高き主を動かし、神威は、最上智は、最初愛は、われを作る。
我が前に物なしただ無窮あり我は無窮に忍ぶものなり。
この門を過ぎんとするものは一切の望を捨てよ。

そして、漱石が参照したカーライルの英訳。

Through me is the way into the doleful city;
 through me the way into the eternal pain;
 through me the way among the people lost.
Justice moved my High Maker; Divine Power
 made me, Wisdom Supreme, and Primal Love.
Before me were no things created, but eternal;
 and eternal I endure: leave all hope, ye that enter.
