Clouds above the Hill

本日付けの The Japan Times 紙に 佐藤紘彰氏が Clouds above the Hill（3巻、4巻）の書評 "A wistful note on a triumphant battle" を書いている。本書は司馬遼太郎の大作『坂の上の雲』の英訳版である。日本語で全6巻構成の本書は、英訳版では全4巻構成であるため、これで完結である。
長い間、英訳されることのなかった司馬の大作は、2012年12月にようやく1巻、2巻（Juliet Winters Carpenter and Paul McCarthy 訳）が刊行され、2013年11月に3巻、4巻（Juliet Winters Carpenter and Andrew Cobbing 訳）が刊行された。（1巻、2巻については佐藤氏が同紙（2013年7月28日付）に寄稿した書評 "Multiple perspectives in novel on the Russo-Japanese War" がある）。訳者のJuliet Winters Carpenter 女史は同志社女子大学教授、Paul McCarthy 氏は駿河台大学名誉教授、Andrew Cobbing 氏は英ノッティンガム大学の准教授である。
司馬遼太郎の小説の英語版である本書は、日本人が日本について英語で語るときの種本として、とても重宝しそうである。仮に司馬史観に賛成しない人でも参考文献としては十分に役立つのではなかろうか。若干値が張る点は玉に瑕であるが（Kindle版は約20%オフ）。
