火によって - ターハル・ベン=ジェルーン

今週 (SEPT. 16, 2013) の The New Yoker 誌の Fiction 欄に登場したのは、By Fire だ。ターハル・ベン=ジェルーン Tahar Ben Jelloun 氏が2011年6月にガリマール社 Gallimard から出した Par le Feu の英語訳である。この本は「アラブの春」と呼ばれた一連の中東革命の発端となった事件が下敷きになっている。つまり実話を元にして書かれた作品である。発端となったのは、「チュニジア中部の地方都市、シーディ・ブズィートに暮らす貧しい一青年、ムハンマド・ブアズィーズィの焼身自殺という出来事だった」。父を亡くし、荷車で果物の行商をして母と妹や弟を養っていた26歳の青年は、2010年12月17日、警察の嫌がらせに遭い、商売道具を没収され、市長に面会を求めたが断られ、市庁舎前で自らの身体に火を放ったのだった。「火柱と化した彼の姿を、その場に居合わせた者たちが携帯写真に撮り友人たちに送り、さらに転送が繰り返されたことで、出来事は瞬く間にチュニジア全土に知れ渡った。ムハンマドがそのからだに火を放ったとき、彼は我知らず中東革命の導火線に点火したのだった」。

この小説の中で一番印象的な焼身自殺の場面を日本語、英語、フランス語で引いておこう。

　最後にもう一度、彼は市長に面会を求めた。拒絶、そして侮辱。守衛に棍棒でど突かれて、その場に崩れた。それからムハンマドは無言のまま起き上がった。市役所の玄関の正面まで行って立ち止まり、鞄から軽油の入っだボトルを取り出して、空になるまで頭から足の先まで軽油をかけた。そして赤いビックのライターに火を点し、一瞬、炎を見つめ、服に近づけた。
　火はすぐに燃えひろがった。ほんの数分。群衆が駆けつけた。市役所の守衛が喚いていた。自分の上着で火を消そうとした。ムハンマドは火柱となった。救急車が到着したとき、火は消えていたが、ムハンマドは人間の姿をすべて失っていた。

　One last time, Mohamed asked to see the mayor. Refusals and insults. The man at the front desk pushed him with his club and he fell to the ground. Mohamed rose in silence and went to stand in front of the town hall's main entrance. He took the bottle of gasoline from the bag, poured it over himself, from head to toe, until the bottle was empty. Then he lit his Bic lighter, looked for a moment into its flame, and drew it toward his clothes.
　The fire ignited instantly. Within moments, the crowd ran toward him. The front-desk man screamed. He cried to put out the fire with his jacket, but Mohamed had transformed into a torch. By the time an ambulance arrived, the fire was out, but Mohamed had lost all human resemblance.

　Une dernière fois, il demanda que le maire le recoive. Refus et insultes. Le concierge le poussa avec son gourdin et le fit tomber. Puis Mohamed se releva en silence. Il alla se poster juste en face de l’entrée principale de la mairie, sortit la bouteille de gazoil de sa sacoche, s'aspergea de haut en bas, jusqu'à ce que la bouteille soit vide. Ensuite, il alluma son briquet Bic rouge, regarda une seconde la flamme et l'approcha de ses habits.
　Le feu prit tout de suite. Quelques minutes. La foule accourut, Le concierge de la mairie hurlait. Essayait d’éteindre le feu avec sa veste. Mohamed se transforma en torche. Lorsque l’ambulance arriva, le feu était éteint, mais Mohammed avait perdu toute ressemblance avec un être humain.
